Newcastle reached the fourth round of the F.A cup by beating Crystal Palace 1-0 at St James' Park.It was a dull game, but made memorable by the only goal-a spectacular strike by Paul Gascoigne from 35 yards.

Here it is and interesting to see Pardew score against us only to have it ruled out. Thanks to our friend Sparko for the video.:yep:

In a move that shocked football,Newcastle sold star asset Andy Cole to rivals Manchester United for £7m.Fans were outraged by this piece of skullduggery which seemed to put money making before having a good team.Kevin Keegan lost a little credibility as a result.Although Newcastle gained the talent of Keith Gillespie, the folly of this move became apparent later.

Newcastle discovered how good a team "The Busby Babes" of Man Utd were,as they lost 6-1 at Old Trafford.Jackie Milburn scored but Newcastle were overwhelmed.Little wonder that Kenneth Wolstenholme purred his pleasure the following day on BBC Sports Special.

After failing to register a victory since the end of November,Newcastle returned to winning ways with an exciting 5-4 win over Leicester City. The defending was woeful but the 20,785 crowd enjoyed the 2 goals of Mark McGhee and Mick Quinn, and the 1 from John Gallacher. It was also Roy Aitken's debut.Anyway here it is courtesy of our friend Sparko.

A Bryan Robson goal was enough to see Newcastle through to the next round of the Inter Cities Fairs Cup at St Mary's ground Southampton. The game finishes 1-1,but as the 1st leg at St James' was 0-0,Newcastle went through on the away goals rule.It was some consolation for the F.A Cup exit 11 days before.

The war had been on for almost six months and clearlywas not ending soon.Newcastle beat West Ham 3-2 in the FA Cup 1st round replay,as Bob Pailor scored twice and Billy Hibbert once.At half time, the Lord Mayor,Alderman T Fitzgerald held a recruitment drive inviting the crowd to enlist with the Northumberland Fusiliers, and leaflets were issued to likely looking young men.
