I'm starting this thread called "On this day"......and every day i'll give you all a fact about our beloved Toon on this particular day but a different year.....
Here goes.....

Sat 30th Dec 1989...
It's a long way to Swindon at this time of year and very few Magpies are in the crowd for a mundane 1-1 draw with Mick Quinn scoring Newcastle's goal.Swindon Town were managed by Argentinian World Cup star Osvaldo (Ozzie) Ardiles.

31st Dec 1927

1927 has been a great year for the Toon and it is a shame that it finishes so badly with a 3-2 defeat to Huddersfield at home.Hughie Gallacher scores Newcastle's 2 goals but loses his temper at the denial of a penalty by referee Mr Fogg.Stories about him kicking the referee after the game are probably an exaggeration, but there is certainly some kind of altercation, and a lengthy suspension follows in the New Year.

See it's always went on ....:D

Tues 1st Jan 1985

It's a Happy New Year for 36,529 at St James' Park and for Peter Beardsley in particular,as he scores a hat-trick against the mackems. The score ended 3-1 and the points were very welcome for Jack Charlton and the lads as 4 out of the last 5 games had been lost.

When our managers these days moan about playing 2 games in a week...well how about 2 games in 2 days and even going for the title....

Wed 4th Jan 2012

Newcastle get 2012 off to a great start with an impressive 3-0 victory over Manchester United at St James' Park.A packed ground on a wet and windy night sees a route one goal from Demba Ba,a tremendous free kick from Yohan Cabaye and a late own goal.

Newcastle were doing well in the second division, but a serious reality check was handed out at Anfield in the F.A cup.Liverpool delivered a 4-0 thumping and frankly the Toon weren't even in it.

Mon 7th Jan 1997

Shock news rocks the football world,as out of the blue,Kevin Keegan resigned as manager. The decision mystified supporters and pundits for Newcastle were going well in the Premiership and were still in the FA cup and Uefa cup.He was disappointed to lose the Premiership last year but his resignation was at odds with the way he kept saying "next year" to the fans.
