RE: Ipswich Town (a)
I agree that Lascelles needs to be dropped immediately and Mbemba needs to partner Hanley until Clark can play again, when I would select him alongside Mbemba. Lascelles may come good in the future but his mistakes are costing us dearly just now.
Personally, I would not let either Colback or Gouffran near the team and I only hope Hayden can stay fit.
However, the whole team was at fault today (with the possible exceptions of Murphy, Dummett and Mitrovic, who came on too late) and they seemed curiously flat compared to the last performance. It is particularly odd that a team in midtable with little to play for expressed more desire than a team for whom 3 points would have made automatic promotion reasonably certain.

I honestly don't now where to start on that match. I think Blue is right about his exceptions and his evaluation of the teams performance it was just awful from everyone save those three.

I do wonder what we do going forward. We have defensive options so we can switch those around our midfield though is looking bereft of ideas. Certainly Hanley being back made a huge difference in the leeds match but i think the knocks he took today limited his impact. Shelvey seemed possessed by the spirit of Sissoko and couldn't pass a ball all game long. Ritchie is probably suffering from burn out at this point and was off the pace today, Atsu just isn't good enough, though he is better slightly than Gouff on the wing and Diamé is... well is he sissoko's less arrogant brother? He has all the same flaws as Sissoko in his game. The problem is though... who do we replace them with? who plays to give Ritchie a break? Sammeobi? who do we have that can create like Shelvey? our left wing option is Gouffran and Perez is our only other player for the number ten spot (I would play him ahead of Diame but i understand in some games Rafa thinks having a more natural midfielder in there gives better defensive cover). We may get Aarons back for a game or two and he would offer an option at least but that in itself is a risky unknown. I think the sad truth is we're going to have to get by with those same players and that is going to make it a struggle. What i'd give to be able to recall De Jong at this point.

Bravo Alan.... this is exactly as it is... we can tamper slightly with the defence, have limited and poor alternative's in midfield and without Gayle firing on all cylinders up front we struggle to score enough.

We needed a bit of quality strengthening in January and it wasn't done...... Ashley's poxy little gamble may turn out to be his biggest mistake to date.

If we can't hold on to 2nd then i fear the worst for play-off's simply because we don't seem to have any fight left in this team.

Hopefully we'll see this through otherwise i can see a lot of disgruntled fans turning their backs.... especially if Rafa walks because of Ashley's lack of investment and leaving Rafa with no option but to play idiots or play tired players ffs.

If we don't get promoted, Rafa should sling his hook. It would be nothing short of a massive failure, regardless of what happened in January. The players we have are good enough to have won this league. The way we've been playing football hasn't.

Are they? We don't have a left winger, we don't have a no 10, we don't have a solid, reliable specialist right back. We have no back up for our midfield positions.

RE: Ipswich Town (a)
Admittedly it hasn't happened very often and certainly not often enough, but when this team of players is at its best it looks better than anything else in this league. Brighton away springs to mind as an example of a blend of the right tactics, ability and application showing just how much better than the opposition (in this case the league champions (elect)), NUFC can be. Even last week's game against Leeds, notwithstanding a lack of goals, demonstrated the difference in quality between us and a side tipped for a play-off place. My point is that surely questions must be raised about Rafa's inability to get these kinds of performances from the team on a more regular basis. I believe that there has been an issue with teams sussing us out, but even then, more performances like those mentioned would surely have seen us win at least some of the games that we have drawn or even lost. After all, everybody knew what Ferguson's Manure sides were all about but because they maintained a consistent level of performance - even when they weren't that good towards the end of his tenure at the club - they still won games and championships. More than personnel and tactics, I think our biggest problem this season has been a lack of consistency, possibly borne of the players being too complacent in many games, but ultimately an issue that it has been up to Rafa to sort out. And he hasn't.

That's just it though isn't it, when you look at the season we've had and you look at the squad we have those games have been playing above our natural level. Doing that we're better than any other team but you cannot play above your level every match. You'd be looking at 2/3 times a season which is what we've done.

We've a squad made up of lower premiership level players and upper table championship players. No better than those teams around us. I agree that mentality is our problem, it's something i've been saying for months but here's the thing. You cannot change a players mentality, you can gee them up for a game or help them with confidence a bit but if they aren't players that have a good mentality they never will have. This is why some players make it and some don't. It's why players like Ben Arfa and Sissoko will never be what they could have been. Conversely having a great mentality is what made players like Keegan great and players like Nolan good for the club. Some players simply struggle with pressure, some with confidence, some with arrogance. Our squad, for the most part don't cope with pressure well at all and they've been under pressure all season. It's been that way for a long time now. Man utd won so much because the club was full to the brim of winning mentality and expectations... NUFC has been failing for ten years and is overflowing with a losing mentality. Give Rafa time and money and he'll change that.

I think we'll scrape over the line because of the games we've excelled in and we'll survive next season but we need constant and well thought out investment if we're to escape the same fate again.

Inconsistency has definitely been our undoing Eeeeen, spot on there.

How a team that went to Brighton, Huddersfield, Leeds etc and won can be beaten home & away by Blackburn leaves us sctaching our heads!
