Newcastle United travelled to Southampton yesterday for our eighth Premier League game since returning from our successful tour of the Championship.

Backed by 3,500 away fans making a lot of noise, United put on another professional display being well organised, defending well and showing great mobility on the break.

We came away with a 2-2 draw but it could have been even better having led the saints twice before conceding an unfortunate penalty.

However, a point on the road is a good result in this league, so overall there is a feeling of satisfaction.

Manager Rafa Benitez seemed reasonably content with most of the performance, although disappointed that we gave away two goals.

The gaffer said: “We did well but still we conceded two goals so something was wrong, we have to keep working hard and keep improving”

“My only disappointment was for the fans because we brought 3,500 fans this distance on a Sunday. It is a pity because we could have got three points and we would have been coming back happier.”

So what did the fans think?

Over on the UTD111 Forum, reaction was largely positive. Here’s some of the comments:

Mick: Plusses: Lejeune looks class, Hayden goal and our defensive play.

Minuses: Elliot missing for crosses again and 50% of his distribution is woeful. Perez still lightweight and fannies about too much. I know he scored, but one of their goals came directly from him losing the ball again. We definitely need an upgrade at No10. Merino?

Would have taken a draw before the game. But having seen it – we could so easily have racked up another win.

Never mind – we’ve still got 30 games left to get the 29 points we need for safety!

Eeeeen: Apart from the penalty – and it’s a very big “apart” – Lejeune looked magnificent in this game

Sir Kevin Keegan: Very low possession rate again but I think we should have won it. We had more shots and looked better than them. But it’s another point on the board

Boydie: We are following our trend of less possession but Rafa has got it spot on…. he’s happy for the opposition to have the ball where it can’t hurt us but we bite them when we need to and reserve our energy for when we want to make an assault. We had more corners and more shots on target and if we strengthened in the forward area’s we’d be smashing teams and competing for the Uefa places. Can’t complain as with the squad we have Rafa is squeezing the best out of them and there’s a hunger amongst them.

Mickyquinnstache: I thought we played really well again. Could have got 3 points but a draw is a good result. The keyboard warriors were dissing Perez again despite him being involved in the first and scoring the second goal. I thought he looked better than Joselu to be honest. A few rash challenges today. The penalty was one and Yedlin should have been sent off. Poor refereeing that. We would have been incensed if it was against us.

That’s some of the views – but we’d like to hear from you!

A point will do, but we should have won it. No doubt Rafa will be having a quiet word with Lejeune – who otherwise had a great game.
