It’s the start of a new chapter in the Newcastle United story. A chapter that will have many ups and downs as the season progresses in what is a very tough league.
Somehow, it feels good that this chapter will begin at Craven Cottage – one of the grand old grounds of football.
At Fulham, a “proper” club with history.
like most Newcastle United fans I haven’t a clue what team Rafa will field against Fulham tomorrow night!
To date, we have signed eight new players this transfer window, and the manager reckons he won’t be happy until he’s signed another two or three!
He might even have signed another one whilst I’m writing this! Such is the pace at which events unfold at St James’ Park these days.
However, at least we have a decent-sized squad as we face 46 league games, plus cups.
The bookies have United as overwhelming favourites to win this league and be promoted at the first attempt.
Whilst I would love it, just love it if that happened, I can’t help thinking it’s a bit of an insult to the other clubs who make up this very tough league. And who can blame them if they go into games against us thinking “we’ll see about that!”.
I admit to being out of touch with our first opponent’s current situation. Ex-United player Scotty Parker plays for them of course, and we all know he will need no greater motivation than the thought of putting one over his old club.
Fulham have also very recently sold their goals machine Ross McCormack to Aston Villa. McCormack was, of course, also linked with us earlier in the transfer window.
From a United perspective, I have to say that bearing in mind we were just relegated from the Premier League, I have never seen our fans so happy and optimistic in a very long time. Folks are bouncing and can’t wait for the season to start.
This down to one man – Rafa Benitez. One of the top managers in world football managing the Toon!
I’m sure I’m not the only one who has to pinch myself every now and then to make sure this isn’t a dream.
Here’s hoping for the good times to roll – starting at Fulham!
